Writing for a blog is about understanding what your audience wants to know about, and delivering in such a way that's easy to consume, easy on the eye, but also impactful, as well.

I've developed a framework, thanks to a number of handy tools, that you can use for yourself when writing a blog post.

Tip #1 – 0:53 – Make the Post Transformative

Tip #2 – 1:31 – Outline your thoughts (working backwards from the transformation)

Tip #3 – 2:45 – Start by Engaging Readers (i.e. Start Strong!)

Tip #4 – 3:45 – Don't write in WordPress

Tip #5 – 6:00 – Make your Title and Description Compelling and Relevant

Tip #6 – 7:46 – Make your blog post scannable

Tip #7 – 8:51 – Use visuals (i.e. images) to break up your blog posts

Tip #8 – 9:58 – Include Calls to Actions (please!)

Tip #9 – 11:55 – Proofread your blog post! (also please!) and read it out loud!

Tip #10 – 13:03 – Stop trying to be perfect!

This was such an invaluable video, Pat. It’s a great refresher for me and a “check list” to do before, during, and after each blog post I publish.

Tip #10 was so meant for me. Had been delaying 6 drafts in the past 15 days, trying to make them perfect everytime I started writing.

Love your tips, bro! πŸ˜€

How about length? I hear lately that longer is better. But what is too long? I wrote an article about strategies for local contacts for authentic travel experiences. It came in at a hefty 3400 words. How should I approach this? Multi part post? How large each? Or completely separate stuff?

    Pat Flynn - April 4, 2018 Reply

Too long is there are more words on the page than there needs to be to offer the value you’re trying to provide. If you need 3400 words keep it there and make it the best 3400 word combination ever about that topic. Never try to extend a post to reach a certain amount, or shorten it. Make it what it needs to be, and you will only provide value, and never waste people’s time, and be rewarded accordingly πŸ‘πŸΌ

    Thanks for the quick answer.

Assuming I am providing value, there may be more than one way to deliver that value given the audience being humans with physiological limitations (like attention span). Do you have (or would you recommend) an approach where after a certain length you split things up in certain ways?

From some stats I saw 1600 words seem to be optimal (or 1000 words with a lot of images) and then there is a drop.

Hey Pat, I can’t believe I just discovered your work. This video is wonderful. Even though I’ve been blogging for 3 years actively now, I’m finding 8 out 10 points you made in this video to be fresh and applicable. Thank you for posting this!

How do you start the intro with a story, but also make sure your main keyword is in the 1st sentence. I think I struggle with this alot.
